My nephew requested that I make a lion cake for his 5th birthday party. He wanted it orange because his favorite color is orange. I used prepared icing from the store but to make sure the icing didn't melt (like it has for me in the past when i pipe different designs) i added 1 t corn startch per container of icing. it worked perfectly, it was the perfect consistency!!!
Sorry for the lack of posts....I have been making and baking lots of stuff recently but nothing new so I didn't want to bother posting something you've already seen.

Yes, Noah loved it! This was so cute and fit the party theme so perfectly! Many thanks!
What did you color the icing with? Corn starch, huh? Good idea, cause lately those icings in the containers have been way too soft. They used to harden up when I used them to decorate my Xmas cookies years ago, but the last few years, I've noticed they don't anymore. They must have changed their recipes.
i just used the (liquid) icing from the grocery store, and of course that makes the icing even more soft, then added the corn starch after coloring to make it thicker.
Where the heck I was I when they were singing Happy Birthday? I didn't even see the cake before it was cut. The cake was cute!
You can use the gel food coloring in the jars (at Michael's, walmart, craft/cake supply stores). Those are much more vibrant and don't water down the icing.
oh thanks Jane!! i'll have to buy that type of icing instead. i've never used gel food coloring before
Just buy the smallest bottles of the paste food coloring, tho...it goes bad, and you don't use very much because it's so concentrated. There are many more color options, tho. I just wish I still had time to bake like I used to! (without little "helping" hands!) :)
This medium is the best it is supreme
Thanks
